The
Yorkshire Terrier Dog Knocker was designed by Michael
Healy, an accomplished Rhode Island artisan known
for his Unique Door Knockers.
When Michael first heard the history of this unique breed, he was intrigued.
In the wake of the Industrial Revolution in the mid-19th Century, many miners
and textile workers were forced to leave Scotland to find work in northern England. |
 |
| With
low pay and harsh living conditions, many miners
took to poaching rabbits as a source of food.
It is believed that the Yorkie was developed
by crossing various English and Scottish Terrier
breeds, giving the poachers a small dog that
was ideal for chasing out rabbits. The father
of the modern Yorkie was Huddersfield Ben, born
in the town of Yorkshire in 1865. He was famous
for his success in rat killing contests and dog
shows throughout England.
